Lauren Burke Smith Death, Obituary – The field hockey community is mourning the loss of Lauren Burke Smith, whose passing was announced with deep sadness by USA Field Hockey. Across her years in the sport as a student-athlete, coach, and operations leader Lauren was connected to teams and people at several universities. Her career reflected a lasting commitment to field hockey and to the communities built around it.
Lauren’s journey included time as a student-athlete at the University of Vermont. For many, playing college sports is about more than competition: it means learning to work toward shared goals, supporting teammates, and forming relationships that continue long after the final whistle. Her experience as a player became one part of a life closely tied to the sport.
She later contributed to the game from the sidelines and behind the scenes. Lauren served as an assistant coach at Sacred Heart University and Rutgers University, helping support their field hockey programs. Coaching can shape a team in countless ways from preparing athletes for competition to encouraging confidence, discipline, and trust. Those who played or worked alongside her are best placed to describe the particular ways she influenced them.
Lauren also served as director of operations for Penn State Field Hockey. The role placed her at the center of the program’s day-to-day work, helping support the people and logistics that allow a team to function. While the details of her responsibilities have not been provided, operations staff are essential members of college athletic programs, often working steadily behind the scenes to help coaches and athletes focus on the game.
Her experience across these roles gave her a broad connection to the field hockey world. She knew the sport as a student-athlete and later helped serve it as a coach and administrator. That range of experience linked her to players, colleagues, and programs at Vermont, Sacred Heart, Rutgers, Penn State, and throughout the wider field hockey community.
USA Field Hockey’s tribute expressed condolences to Lauren’s family, friends, teammates, former players, colleagues, and everyone who had the good fortune to know her. The breadth of that message speaks to the many communities touched by her life and work. Her passing is a profound loss for those who shared the sport with her.
No further details about Lauren’s life, the circumstances of her death, or memorial arrangements were included in the information provided. Those details should be shared only when confirmed by her family or a reliable source, and her loved ones’ privacy deserves care during this difficult time.
As the field hockey community remembers Lauren Burke Smith, her years of involvement in the sport offer a meaningful way to honor her: as a player, a coach, a colleague, and a dedicated member of the teams she served.
Our heartfelt condolences go to everyone grieving her loss. May they find comfort in one another and in the memories they carry of Lauren.
